The Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC) plans to organise here a training programme for civil engineering diploma students every year.
Former chairman of the Builders' Association of India, Coimbatore Centre, G. Srinivasan, told The Hindu here on Saturday that a pre-employment training programme was held at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya from May 24 to 29. Of the 54 candidates who participated in it, 44 had just completed their studies and were recruited by construction companies.
From next year, the council would organise the programme during the final semester so that more students benefitted.
CIDC - Tamil Nadu Advisory Group member M. Nagaraj said the council was an arm of the Planning Commission. Its main objective was to represent the issues of the construction industry to the Government. Its other priority areas were common conditions of contract and skill development.
“The diploma students went straight to the field when recruited. Through a week-long programme they learn the intricacies of the industry,” he said.
