A city doctor has won the 'Best Scientific Abstract award for Laparoscopic Treatment of Cancer of Esophagus,' instituted by the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE). The award carrying a citation and a cash prize of USD 500 was presented to Dr C Palanivelu, Director, GEM Hospital and Research Centre, at the 12th World Congress of Diseases of Esophagus held at Kagoshima, Japan, from Sept 2 to 5. The abstract has been selected for outstanding scientific merit, innovation and educational value and promotion for Diseases of the Esophagus, the citation signed by ISDE President Mark K Ferguson said. Talking to reporters today, Palanivelu said the technique, introduced in 2007, was published as a special article in the Journal of American Collge of surgeons and since then it had become "widely popular" and a standard technique across the globe.
