Two Guinness World Records attempted
Students of AVB Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore, on Sunday attempted two Guinness World Records in creating the largest finger painting and bringing together the biggest gathering of people dressed as Mahatma Gandhi. In the finger painting attempt they created the World Classical Tamil Conference logo.
On Sunday morning when the sun draped clouds and chose to remain ‘under cover' for long, 7,522 busy bees got together to attempt two Guinness World Records. And that included an 87-year-old woman.
As many as 1,549 students of AVB Matriculation Higher Secondary School, their parents and also grandparents left their palm and finger imprints on 3,000 sq.m. fabric in a bid to create the world's ‘Largest Finger Paint' and bring together the ‘Biggest Gathering of People Dressed as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.'
They chose to paint the logo of the World Classical Tamil Conference, which begins here on June 23. School Correspondent K. Venkateswaran said it was the institution's way of participating in and supporting the conduct of the conference. To do so they made 7,522 people dip their palms and fingers in 933 litres of paint. It all began at 4.30 a.m. when students from Standard IX to XII left their impressions on the fabric, made up to 50 equal pieces of 60 metres. Their schoolmates from Standard VI to VIII played their role till 6.30 a.m. and those from Standard III to V and lower kindergarten to Standard II the next two hours.
Mr. Venkateswaran said that as and when students and their family members completed a piece of cloth it was stitched and brought to the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University's premises for public display.
Intermittent rain in the last two days forced the school management to change venue and display the logo in the university's basketball court.
Though the Guinness World Records' managers had not set a time limit for the attempt, the school management chose to finish it around 9 a.m. and did so well within the self-imposed target. By then, 87-year-old Kalyani, paternal grandmother of D. Srinath, a Plus-Two student, had also left her imprint. “I did so because my grandson wanted to; but do not understand what it is all about,” said the oldest of the participants.
“It is something big is all I can make out.” The current Guinness World Record in the category is on 2,505 sq.m. fabric.
The second of Sunday's attempt saw the school management bring together 255 students dressed as Mahatma Gandhi. As per Guinness rules, each of the participants should have their heads shaved or covered, wear spectacles, sport false moustache, and wear dhoti and an upper garment.
In keeping with the spirit of the event, 52 of the 255 students chose to shave their heads. Others covered it with pastel cream clothes. The Correspondent said the make-up started at 5.30 a.m. and got over around 10 a.m.
Throughout the event, the management sent video clippings and photos to the Guinness management, as is the rule.
This was in addition to the presence of Guinness representatives. Also present were people from the Limca Book of Records.
