Stating that Tamil Nadu had succeeded in the software industry owing to the availability of a large pool of educated work force and progressive policies among others, Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin described the State as the “growth star” of India.
Inaugurating the Global Development Centre (Information Technology Special Economic Zone) of Syntel at SIPCOT IT Park in Siruseri on Saturday, he said: “As the Minister in charge of industries, I can say with a sense of pride that Tamil Nadu today excels among Indian States in industrialisation.”
“Tamil Nadu is one of the largest recipients of domestic and foreign investments in the country and has emerged as the ‘growth star' of India,” Mr. Stalin said adding that the State government was committed to spread the IT revolution to other parts of the State to create employment opportunities for the qualified rural youth.
Additional productivity improvements and the development of Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities such as Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchi and Hosur as delivery centres would improve the State's advantage, he said. TIDEL Park in Coimbatore, with a floor space of 17 lakh square feet would be inaugurated next month.
He said Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi had a vision of making Tamil Nadu the software hub of South Asia and to achieve 25 per cent share of software production in the country. If this was achieved, it would give direct employment to eight lakh people and indirect employment to another 22 lakh people in Tamil Nadu, he said.
Thanking Syntel for its proposals to start SEZs in Tirunelveli and Madurai, for which Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu had handed over 25 acres in each of the cities, Mr. Stalin appealed to the company to cooperate with the State government in implementing its e-waste policy.
He also appealed to all IT companies to allocate 3 per cent of their budget for corporate social responsibility activities.
