Accent on planting saplings to increase green cover in city
‘Save Greenery and Save Earth' was the motto as various organisations and educational institutions celebrated the World Environment Day here on Saturday.
Isha Foundation took the lead by planting saplings on the premises of Salem Government Arts College.
Its main objective was to increase the green cover in Tamil Nadu by at least 10 per cent by planting 11.4 crore saplings.
Many had joined the crusade and so far 82 lakh saplings had been planted in the State. S. Seetharaman presided over the sapling plantation in Salem city which Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini inaugurated.
In another event, Mayor and Corporation Commissioner planted saplings behind the office of Salem Corporation on behalf of Veerapandi Chezhiyan Green Movement in which various organisations including Asokar Pasumai Illam Movement, Vinayaka Vidyalaya Matriculation HSS, Salem Green City, Tharunam and others took part.
Officials from Department of Forest distributed free saplings also. The Salem district administration had also informed that general public who came to understand that trees in their localities were illegally felled by anti socials and others could contact the following phone numbers: 0427- 2336002, 2336003 and 2336004.
Seminars and workshops also were organised in many institutions.
A drawing competition for school children on ‘Environment' was organised at Modern Petrol Bunk in which more than 50 children took part. Malar Vishu Kaliappan presided.
